UMTON Kordofan Gum Arabic 100 ml

High-quality natural gum arabic from the renowned Czech manufacturer UMTON, made for true masters of painting. Kordofan Arabic Gum is a resin from the acacia tree. Gum arabic slowly dissolves in cold water to form a thick, highly adhesive solution at a ratio of 1: 2. A thin layer of dissolved gum arabic dries to form a colorless, gloss, hard coating that can easily be dissolved again with water. It is very stable in dry conditions, does not yellow, cloud, or weather. However, it is very brittle, so plasticizers (glycerin, glucose, or granulated sugar) must be added. With a plasticizer added, it can be used to prepare solid watercolor paints that soften easily when moistened and can be diluted with water as needed.
Gum arabic solutions in water remain fluid even at high concentrations, a quality that sets them apart from all other water-soluble binders. This makes them suitable for watercolor and miniature painting: they produce rich shades of paint and allow even the smallest details to be rendered precisely.

Preparing a gum arabic solution: Leave 100 parts Kordofan gum to swell in 200 parts cold water for one day, then dissolve it by heating. Add a small piece of camphor, borax, or a trace of formalin to prevent the solution from turning sour.

Gum arabic can also be emulsified with wax: Heat 5 parts powdered gum arabic, 4 parts beeswax, and 1 part dammar varnish to about 70 degrees Celsius, then add 10 parts hot boiled water with 2 parts glycerin.
